On December 13th, 2018 I decided to go back to putting pencil to paper and revisit the basics, starting with something small that I could do every morning. I challenged myself to draw a letter a day, going from pencil sketches to refining with tracing paper and finalizing in pen, and lastly vectorizing the letters. Every day I posted a new hand-drawn sketch on my instagram. There wasn't a goal in mind upon completion - I just wanted to see how I felt. At the end of the day, I realized that I loved rethinking how to express a certain letters with shapes and ink, and how much I enjoyed exploring all kinds of physical forms and including debating the positive aspects of ornamentation versus simplicity and what that means in typography. It was an interesting experiment that made me think about how I myself responded to certain aesthetics, and what that means for the future of the work I'd like to do.
Since, I've continued to post on my instagram daily (or as often as possible) because the pure joy of creating something for the pure enjoyment was something I felt was therapeutic.
